Day 7: Sunday, April 19
Our first visit today is to the First Landing State Park and the historic Cape Henry Lighthouses. Then, we travel across the scenic Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel to Cape Charles. This afternoon, we head to downtown Norfolk for the spectacular Virginia International Tattoo, the largest show of its kind in the United States and the largest such event in North America. So, what is an International Music Tattoo? The centuries-old tradition of Tattoo originated as a signal from drummers instructing Dutch innkeepers near military garrisons to “Doe den Tap-too” or “turn off the tap”. Hearing the call “Tap-too” soldiers would return to their barracks for an evening roll call. The ensuing parade of soldiers evolved into a military marching band performance now known worldwide as “Tattoo.” The Tattoos seen across the world today are ceremonial performances of military music by massed bands. After the amazing Tattoo performance, we will have dinner at Stripers Waterside Restaurant, where we enjoy waterfront dining and stunning views. (B, D)
