Day 1: Tuesday, May 26
We travel to Lexington, Kentucky, where our first stop is Old Friends, a peaceful retirement farm where we meet former racehorses now living out their days in green pastures and receiving loving care. Then, we check into the Origin Hotel Lexington, a Wyndham hotel inspired by the Bluegrass state. Dinner this evening is at Lexington’s The Speakeasy, a take on the time of the roaring 1920s during Prohibition. (D)
Day 2: Wednesday, May 27
We begin our day at Claiborne Farm, where history runs deep and legends like Secretariat are born. Walking the grounds, we take in the tradition and excellence that define this farm. Then, we enjoy lunch at the Kentucky Castle, where the stunning architecture and sweeping views make us feel like royalty. Next, we visit Double Dan Horsemanship Farm, where we watch master horsemen work in perfect harmony with their animals. The horsemanship is both powerful and poetic — a true highlight. Sweet treats await us at Old Kentucky Chocolates, where we indulge in local confections and maybe sneak a few souvenirs for home. This afternoon, we return to our hotel where you have the evening to shop and explore for dinner on your own at the Summit Center at Fritz Farm just outside the doors of our hotel. (B, L)
Day 3: Thursday, May 28
Today begins with a visit to Keeneland Racetrack, established in 1937. Keeneland hosts world-class horse racing and significant horse auctions. We tour the track, peek into the barns and imagine the thrill of race day. Then we head to Irish Acres Gallery for a delicious and stylish lunch at The Glitz, where local flavors shine. Irish Acres is home to more than 50 themed showrooms in a 1930s schoolhouse. In the afternoon, we arrive at Mill Ridge Farm, a family-run operation with a deep passion for horses and hospitality. We meet foals, mares and the dedicated team that makes this place special. From there, we move on to Bluegrass Distillery, where we sip small-batch bourbon and learn about the distilling process. Back at the Origin Hotel, we freshen up before heading to Holy Hill Inn for dinner. (B, L, D)
Day 4: Friday, May 29
This morning, we visit Spy Coast Farm Rehabilitation and Fitness Center, where we get a behind-the-scenes look at equine sports medicine and cutting-edge rehabilitation techniques. It’s a fascinating glimpse into how these athletes are cared for and restored. Lunch today is included at Claudia Sanders Dinner House, where Kentucky tradition is served family-style and the hospitality feels like home. After lunch, we continue home with great memories of our time in Bluegrass horse country. (B, L)
