Itinerary:

Day 1

Meet new friends and say hi to old friends as we begin our journey today, stopping in Council Bluffs, Iowa, overnighting at the Holiday Inn Ameristar. (D)

Day 2

Following breakfast, we continue our journey, arriving in Rapid, City, South Dakota, late afternoon and checking into our deluxe accommodations for the next five nights, Home 2 Suites. Rapid City is the gateway to the Black Hills and known as the City of Presidents. Tonight, we will enjoy our welcome dinner reception. (B, D)

Day 3

This morning, we are joined by a Local Guide who will be with us for the next four days. Badlands National Park boasts striking landscapes of layered rock formations, steep canyons, and towering spires. Wildlife abounds in the park’s 244,000 acres and can often be seen as we travel the Badlands Loop State Scenic Byway. Next, we head to Wall Drug, where free ice water and 5-cent coffee has grown into a sprawling complex of shops, restaurants, and attractions, drawing visitors from around the world. Last, we will visit the Minutemen Missile National Historic Site which was established to preserve and interpret the history of the Minuteman Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) system. Dinner on your own this evening with great restaurants nearby. (B, D)

Day 4

Custer State Park is known for its stunning natural beauty, with rolling hills, granite peaks, and crystal-clear lakes. After our visitor center stop, which features a film of the park itself, we will travel the Wildlife Road where the buffalo roam. This part of the park features the Bison Center where we learn about their famous “Buffalo Roundup.” After our included lunch in the “Game Lodge”, we will truly enjoy the park’s beauty and history by traversing “Needles Highway” on a narrated jeep ride! This scenic highway is famous for winding through narrow tunnels and past towering granite spires. (B, L)

Day 5
Our first visit today is Devils Tower, which is a unique and natural wonder. For those who wish, you may even follow the paved path completely around the butte, which was our first U.S. National Monument. Next, it’s Deadwood, South Dakota, where we will walk in the footsteps of historic old west legends like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Tonight, a private dinner and show will be served in the High Plains Western Heritage Center. This special museum plays an important role in preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the American West and is a must visit! (B, D)

Day 6

We start the morning with a visit to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. This special landmark celebrates the history and legacy of the United States. It is an impressive engineering feat that serves as an important symbol of American pride and patriotism. Next, we ride the 1880 Train to Hill City! This narrated 20-mile trip takes us through vistas of Harney Peak, mining encampments, and the scenic hills following the original route of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad laid down in the late 1880s. From the train we will visit the Crazy Horse Memorial. This is a mountain monument under construction which will depict a Lakota warrior, riding a horse and pointing to his tribal land. The monument has been in progress since 1948 and is far from completion. Our farewell dinner will be at the Ruby House in Keystone followed by a very patriotic evening as we visit Mount Rushmore one last time to watch the ceremonial night lighting of the monument. (B, D)

Day 7

Memories of majestic peaks and mighty presidents will be with us as we head off on our motorcoach this morning. We will overnight in Council Bluffs, Iowa, at the Holiday Inn Ameristar.  (B, D)
