Get a panoramic view of the beautiful Ohio Amish countryside as you sample the delicious flavors and all the culinary delights along the way. See the work of skilled artisans and even “hammer out” your own piece of artwork. And what could be better than a Cookie Tin Trail? You’ll load up your tin with cookies and treats as we tour through Amish country!
Venture northeast to Sugarcreek, the “Little Switzerland of Ohio” and check into Carlisle Inn. Delicious dinner tonight. (D)
This morning we receive our cookie tins for the beginning of a delicious Cookie Tin Tour. We will be filling our tins with delicious treats along our trail! A unique attraction awaits us at the Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center: an oil-on-canvas circular mural 10 feet in height and 265 feet in length! You can also learn the amazing history of the Amish and Mennonites. We will have the first of several treats for our tin from here!
At the Wendell August Forge, in the historic Wendell Barn, you’ll find handcrafted gifts. This is where you can hand hammer your own picture to take home, and see the world’s largest Amish buggy! We arrive at Walnut Creek Cheese, for lunch on your own at the Mudd Valley Café. From a large array of bulk foods, spices, and more, fresh is at the top of the list for each product. Enjoy an ice cream treat!
The world’s largest cuckoo clock in Sugarcreek, featured on the cover of the Guinness Book of World Records in 1977, plays a Swiss polka every half hour. And don’t forget, we’re still adding treats to our tin! Esther’s Home Bakery and Candies is our next stop where more culinary treasures await. Back to the hotel for a break, where you can visit shops nearby. This afternoon we make a visit to Warther Cutlery for a demo, samples, and a knife lesson. Tour the Warther Museum next door, home of the world’s master carver! See Mrs. Warther’s famous button house, view the priceless steam engine carvings, then sit down to a delicious dinner. (B, D)
After breakfast, we depart to Yoder’s Amish Home and Farm for a house tour and buggy rides. The barn is over 100 years old! Visit a one-
room Amish School and watch girls baking in the kitchen. Yes, we’re still adding cookies to our tins.
Visit shops and enjoy some free time on our next stop to the Village of Berlin for lunch on own. Heini’s Cheese and Kauffman Bakery provides more opportunity to sample the delectable delights of Ohio Amish Country. Then, rest with a little free time at the inn. This afternoon, we are welcomed to an Amish home where we’ll join in dinner together in the room they built for their daughter’s wedding! Learn how to make Amish peanut butter whip! Tonight, we will spend a fun-filled evening at the Ohio Star Theater for a performance of old-fashioned simplicity and non-stop laughter. (B, D)
After breakfast, help with candy making at Troyer Candies. On to Lehman’s Country Store and Hardware where there are many of the non-
electrical items the Amish use: kitchen gadgets, garden and home appliances, toys, gifts, food items, and so much more! Yes, we’re still adding treats to our tins! Lehman’s is a hardware store constructed from four pre-Civil War era buildings. It is a place to embrace the past with old-fashioned treats and a store that is nearly a quarter mile long! We depart to P. Graham Dunn, a manufacturer of inspirational art, gifts and home decor. Off to the newly expanded Walnut Creek Amish Country Flea Market for lunch on your own and a fun scavenger hunt. There are dozens of vendors under roof, featuring arts, crafts, furniture, home décor items, food items, kitchen gadgets, jewelry, clothes, games, and so much more!
Following a little free time at the inn, savor a delicious dinner at Berlin Encore Banquet Hall before enjoying a performance at the Amish Country Theater! The show features a live musical and comedy variety show, fabulous ventriloquist Ken Groves, and lots of fun audience participation! (B, D)
