The Historic Area of Colonial Williamsburg recreates the atmosphere and lifestyle of Virginia’s colonial capital city. The Historic Area includes 89 original 18th-century buildings, as well as hundreds more buildings reconstructed based on historical records and archaeological research. Explore the community, interact with historic interpreters, and learn more about the daily lives of the diverse men and women who lived in Williamsburg before and during the American Revolution.
Day 1 — We depart this morning to travel west toward Virginia. This evening we stay at the Hampton Inn Abingdon, Virginia, with dinner included at the The Tavern, a historical fine dining experience. (D)
Day 2 — After breakfast at the hotel we continue traveling into the past. We stop for lunch at Michie Tavern, an 18th-century style pub and a Virginia Historic Landmark. Next, we make our way to Monticello, the historic home of Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson, third president, philosopher, scientist, historian and author of the Declaration of the Independence, helped establish the foundations of self-government and individual freedom we know today. Monticello, that Jefferson himself designed, has a total of 33 rooms with 11,000 square feet and one-tenth of the window glass is original. Learn about the house, its construction by the free and enslaved people, its value, and much more and then explore the beautiful gardens and gift shop. We continue to our hotel for the next four nights, Williamsburg Lodge, in the heart of the historic area. Tonight enjoy dinner on your own at the lodge or take a shuttle and explore Merchants Square, a historic shopping an dining destination. (B, L)
Day 3 — After a breakfast of southern fare at our hotel, we arrive at the U.S. National Park Service’s Jamestowne Visitors Center. On a guided visit through the Jamestown Rediscovery complex, the actual original location of Jamestown, we witness archeological finds, active digs and artifacts displayed in the Archaearium (“low walking tour” option available). Next, we view a glassblowing demonstration on a guided visit to Jamestown Glasshouse of 1608, a popular re-creation of a colonial glasshouse. A boxed lunch is included today at Billsburg Brewery’s Outdoor Pavilion with views of Powhatan Creek. Following lunch, we travel a short distance to Jamestown Settlement, a museum of 17th-century Virginia history and culture. Through immersive films, gallery exhibits, outdoor re-creations and a guided tour, we learn about the Virginia Indians who occupied the landscape for centuries, the arrival of English colonists and the first documented arrival of West Central Africans, leading to cultural encounters and events that planted the seeds of a new nation. We have free time to visit the gift shop and/or explore. We return to our hotel this afternoon for a brief rest before a delectable dinner at Aberdeen Barn. This restaurant features award-winning steaks and a cozy atmosphere. (B, L, D)
