Door County was named the top trip in the Midwest in a list of “20 Best Weekend Getaways from Every US Region” by TripAdvisor in 2018. Door County took home the top spot in 2017 in USA Today’s 10 Best Contest for Best Wisconsin Attraction.
Door County has a jackpot of draws, like great local eats, interesting museums, cultural points, noteworthy natural attractions and outdoor adventures. USA Today says,”Five state parks, 300 miles of shoreline, hundreds of non-chain shops, galleries and restaurants, all amid the beauty of Lake Michigan…’ – need we say more?
Sunday August 19 We travel and then check into the Bridgeport Resort in Sturgeon Bay, directly on the lake. Dinner at the Log Den. (D)
Monday August 20 Breakfast at the hotel. Then we head to Northport Pier where we will board the ferry and relax in the comfort of our own coach. During the 30 minute boat ride, our guide will explain the history of the outlying Islands, the Lighthouses and give an introduction to Washington Island. On the Island, see beautiful West Harbor and learn about logging in the 1800’s as well as the Niagara Escarpment. Admire the beautiful Norwegian Stave Chapel-patterned after the one in Borgund, Norway and follow the prayer path to Trinity Lutheran Church and learn about life on an Island.
We will visit the Historic Island Dairy and see their Island Lavender fields. They also have the Island History Exhibit and the Type & Ink Art Gallery there. This stop will make everyone happy.
Continuing to explore the island, we travel on the main road and learn about the Performing Arts Center, Recreation Center, School System, Community Center Library and Clinic. We’ll learn about life on an Island as we meet some of the islanders.
On to Historic Washington Harbor and beautiful School House Beach, where we shall have a “stone skipping contest.” We step back into history at the farm museum and see what island life was like without electricity!
Next we visit Jackson Harbor to learn about commercial fishing and view Wisconsin’s smallest state park across the harbor. We shall make our way across the back roads to the Ferry dock. We then make our way across the backroads to the ferry dock to depart the island, ready for dinner before we head back to the Bridgeport Resort. (B,L, D)
Tuesday August 21 Today we experience the Chicago Fireboat Cruise. This 1 ½ hour narrated tour will either take us on a breathtaking cruise through the Sturgeon Bay Canal or to Sherwood Point Lighthouse, depending on the winds. Lunch is included. Bring a sweater or jacket depending on the weather. Enjoy some free time before dinner. (B,L,D)
Wednesday August 22 After breakfast at the hotel, we are joined by our guide and off we go to see a concert with Dan Meunier. Dan is a composer, singer and storyteller who holds concerts in his historic schoolhouse which doubles as a museum. The schoolhouse, filled with works of art and eclectic antiquities, has become a place for Dan to share his love of the creative spirit. Enjoy a special concert of old-time music, comedy and hymns that is sure to please! Dan performs from a grand piano, an upright piano, and from an antique parlor organ.
No tour to Door County is complete without a stop at Bjorklunden Stave Chapel. This little gem is patterned after the Stave Chapel in Lillehammer, Norway and is filled with 41 Fresco Paintings and beautiful wood carvings. We shall have a guided tour to learn of the dedication and history of the people who built this little gem during WWII.
Get ready for a one-of-a-kind meal when we experience lunch at Al Johnsons! Al Johnsons is an authentic Swedish family owned restaurant where you can find goats grazing the sod roof. Young ladies in Scandinavian garb dish out limpa bread and Swedish meatballs. After lunch, we continue to experience a further “Taste of Door County” at the Farm Market. Sample Wisconsin’s famous cheddars, homemade jams/jellies/relishes and dried/chocolate covered cherries!
Next, as we drive through Wisconsin’s largest State Park we can experience the beauty of the shores and bluffs on our way to Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. Built in 1868, the living quarters are completely furnished from that era and we see what life was like in a lighthouse in the 1880’s. Then, we go on to shopping in some of the neatest shops on the Peninsula. After that, we’ll stroll over to Pelletier’s for their famous Fish Boil. Delight in watching the “Boil Over” and enjoy the technique and cooking process of fresh Lake Michigan Whitefish. Save room for a slice of Seaquist Orchards Door County Cherry Pie for dessert.
